Our First Maltese
How We Came to Know and Love Maltese
The first time we saw a Maltese was in 1997 when we visited my brother. As we entered their home these two balls of energy with long lovely flowing hair greeted us with kisses. We were smitten at first sight. Shortly after that we got Magic, our first Maltese.
I bought Magic without knowing anything about the breed or about how to
buy a quality dog. I just knew that we wanted one "of those little
white dogs." In spite of his parents ignorance, Magic turned out to
be incredibility sweet and smart. He will fetch a rope, ball or anything
else for as long as you will throw it.
I tried to learn everything I could about the breed. Every article I read said brush or comb their hair everyday. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get a brush through Magic's hair!! He has a "cotton" coat rather than the soft silky coat that is most desirable for a Maltese. We love Magic with all our heart but it soon became apparent that we wanted to add another Maltese to our family. So, armed with my newly acquired knowledge of the standard for the breed, I began my search and found our second Maltese. She is a beautiful little girl we named Angel.
I knew much more about the breed when we got Angel. Her coat was soft and
silky, she had a straight back and a wonderful personality. When she walked
you can just tell that she was saying, "Hey, look at me!!!"
People soon began to say, “You ought to show her.”
Well, I knew nothing about dog shows, but I soon learned. I read books, went to shows (my first one was a day of total confusion), took classes, watched the best handlers, ask questions and then decided to try it myself. See Our First Show Dog page to see what happened!
