Each competition follows a standard routine.
The
dogs competing are brought into the ring by their handlers and lined up
for initial examination by the judge.
Then
they take a walk around the perimeter of the ring in a line, giving the
judge an opportunity to observe each dog’s gait from the side.
Next
each dog is examined at the judging station. Small dogs are normally lifted
to a table to be examined while larger dogs are examined on the floor of
the ring.
Then the dog is led out and back along a course that is (usually) diagonal
across the ring. This gives the judge the opportunity to observe the dog's
gait and appearance from the front and the rear while walking. The judge
will normally take one more look at the dogs as a group after examining
each one individually and then select the top dogs in the category and rank
them accordingly.
